When Thai international student Jay arrives in Seoul to visit his childhood friend Seong Hun, he expects a simple reunion — not a mandatory joint enrollment in a 'Health and Happiness' class that requires a detailed physical body assessment as its final project. Forced to strip down to their gym gear and measure everything from flexibility to heart rate under the watchful eye of a quirky professor, Jay and Seong Hun’s easy friendship is suddenly charged with unexpected tension. As they navigate skin-to-skin contact, stolen glances, and late-night study sessions, the line between platonic care and budding romance begins to blur. Shot with the soft lighting of a Korean indie film, Eccentric Romance is a tender, slow-burn exploration of cross-cultural connection, first love, and the courage it takes to bare yourself — literally and emotionally — to someone who might just matter more than a final grade.

I am absolutely smitten. Jay and Seong Hun have this adorable awkwardness that makes every scene feel like a warm hug. The moment they have to measure each other's heart rates? I nearly screamed. Pure, innocent, and exactly the kind of love story I needed.

Visually, this movie is a treat. The muted autumn palette, the soft focus on the gymnasium windows, and the way natural light falls on the actors' faces — it’s basically a two-hour indie photoshoot. The director clearly has an eye for framing emotional beats without dialogue.

I wanted to love it, but the script relies too heavily on the ‘physical assessment’ gimmick and then forgets to develop any real conflict. The romance feels rushed in the final act, and Seong Hun’s character arc is barely sketched. Cute but forgettable.

I appreciate that the movie handles physical contact with clear consent — Jay always asks before touching, and the professor makes the class opt-in. However, the story sidelines Jay’s identity as a foreign student and never addresses the power imbalance of Seong Hun being the local. A missed opportunity for deeper cultural commentary.

The OST is a hidden gem. That acoustic guitar theme that plays every time Jay looks at Seong Hun across the gym? Chills. The instrumental track during their final assessment scene had me tearing up. I’ve already added ‘First Heartbeat’ to my playlist.
