Set against the vibrant backdrop of Taipei's nightlife, 'Drunk' is a tender and achingly honest Taiwanese short film that dives headfirst into the tangled mess of friendship, longing, and blurred boundaries. We follow two best friends: one outgoing and impulsive, the other quiet and introspective. Their bond is unshakeable—they finish each other’s sentences, know each other’s secrets, and rely on one another for emotional survival. But as they share deeper conversations, fleeting touches, and a few too many drinks, the line between platonic devotion and romantic desire begins to dissolve. What starts as a playful exploration of dependency slowly reveals the quiet pain of unspoken feelings and the fear of losing the one person who truly understands you. Director James Jing crafts an intimate, slow-burn portrait of two souls navigating the terrifying question: 'Is it love, or just habit?' With naturalistic performances, a moody color palette, and a poignant ending that lingers long after the credits roll, 'Drunk' is a must-watch for anyone who believes that the most profound love stories often start with 'I don’t want to lose you.'

I was completely swept away by the raw, aching tension between these two. Every stolen glance, every hesitant touch—it all felt so painfully real. This is the kind of queer story we need: messy, quiet, and deeply human. The ending broke me in the best way.

Visually, this short film is a gem. The use of warm neon lights and shallow depth of field creates an almost voyeuristic intimacy. The camera doesn't just observe—it lingers. A few shots could have been trimmed to tighten pacing, but overall a stunning directorial debut.

I appreciate the attempt at realism, but the story felt too thin to sustain even a 25-minute runtime. The characters are archetypes—the loud one and the quiet one—and we've seen this 'friends-to-lovers-but-scared' trope done with more nuance in longer dramas. The chemistry is there, but I needed more plot.

It's refreshing to see a BL film that doesn't shy away from the messy power dynamics of a lifelong friendship shifting into romance. However, I wish the script had addressed consent more explicitly during the one physical scene—it's ambiguous enough to make me uncomfortable. Still, a worthwhile conversation starter about boundaries.
