Cris and Nico are celebrating their first anniversary as a couple, a milestone that feels both exhilarating and terrifying. In a bold step toward deeper commitment, Cris decides it's finally time to introduce Nico to his mother, who lives in a quiet town just outside the city. It's been a year since Cris last visited her, and he's haunted by unspoken fears about her reaction. As the two men journey together, they navigate the tender awkwardness of a relationship tested by familial expectations and societal pressures. This intimate indie film from the Philippines balances warm comedy with genuine drama, capturing the small, meaningful moments that define a young gay couple's love. With a focus on heartfelt conversation and quiet vulnerability, "Discreetly" offers a rare, honest glimpse into the joys and anxieties of coming out to family—making it a quietly revolutionary piece of early BL cinema.

I went in expecting a rough indie film, but the chemistry between Cris and Nico felt so natural and tender. The scene where they arrive at the mother's house had me holding my breath. It's not flashy, but it's real – exactly what I crave in a romance.

The pacing drags in the middle, and some dialogue feels improvised to the point of awkwardness. But I appreciate the raw attempt at depicting a gay relationship outside the usual BL tropes. It's more of a historical curiosity than a great film.

Visually, this is scrappy – shot on what looks like a consumer camcorder – but the framing during the intimate conversations is surprisingly effective. The soft lighting in the mother's garden scene is my favorite. It gives the whole film a nostalgic, home-movie feel.

I appreciate that the film doesn't sensationalize the couple's intimacy; it's shown as a natural part of their relationship. However, the mother's reaction feels a bit rushed and could have explored deeper family dynamics. Still, a valuable piece for understanding early 2010s queer indie cinema.

I was hoping for a soundtrack that would elevate the emotional beats, but the background music is almost nonexistent. The ambient sounds are nice, but I needed more musical cues to connect with the story. Still, the leads' voices carry the emotion well enough.
