In the bittersweet 16-minute short film *Departure*, two ex-lovers, Tien and Fan, meet by chance at a Japanese bar in Taipei. Tien needs his passport back, and Fan needs closure. What unfolds is a raw, emotionally charged dinner conversation where every casual word and awkward silence reveals the painful asymmetry of their breakup. Fan is still desperately in love, searching for answers and clinging to the past, while Tien has already moved on, his eyes fixed on the future. Through small gestures—Fan ordering Tien's favorite dish, Tien picking the green onions from Fan's plate—the film masterfully captures the ache of one-sided love and the quiet devastation of a relationship that has run its course. Directed with a keen eye for nuance, *Departure* is a gorgeously acted, heartbreakingly realistic snapshot of the moment when two people realize they can never go back to how things used to be. It's a must-watch for fans of poignant, slice-of-life LGBTQ+ storytelling.

I couldn't help but feel furious at Tien for refusing to give Fan even a sliver of closure. The film brilliantly shows how moving on without explaining hurts the other person, but I wish it had acknowledged that Fan's clinging might also be toxic. Still, the acting is phenomenal, and it made me think.

For a 16-minute short, the direction and framing are incredible. Every close-up of Fan's face captures his longing, and the use of the Bluetooth earbuds as a metaphor for failed connection is genius. The lighting in the bar gives it a melancholic, intimate feel. Beautiful work.

The background music complements the mood perfectly—soft, jazzy, and wistful. It sets the tone for the awkward dinner. But the story itself felt a bit too simple and predictable. I was hoping for more layers musically, but for a short film, it's solid.

I get that it's realistic, but realism doesn't always make good storytelling. Watching Tien ignore Fan's pleas for 16 minutes was frustrating, not cathartic. The ending felt abrupt, and I needed some form of resolution—not a hug that says nothing. Disappointing.

My heart absolutely broke for Fan. He just wanted to understand why the love of his life left him! The moments where he ordered Tien's favorite dish and when Tien silently removed the onions—that's the kind of detail that kills me. This short made me cry harder than most full-length BL dramas. Highly recommend if you love aching romance.
