When a husband and father dies of cancer, his widow and teenage son are left grappling with a shocking revelation: his life insurance policy is made out to his male lover, Jay. The mother, Sanlian, is consumed by anger and a desperate need to reclaim the money for her son's future, while her son, Chengxi, is confused and resentful. As Chengxi moves in with Jay, a free-spirited man who is deeply grieving, the film masterfully weaves between past and present, uncovering the hidden history between the deceased, his wife, and his lover. This is not a simple story of infidelity, but a poignant exploration of love, loss, societal pressure, and the messy, painful process of understanding those we thought we knew. Through its nonlinear narrative and beautifully drawn characters, *Dear Ex* challenges viewers to see beyond labels and embrace the complex, often contradictory nature of human relationships and grief.

I went into this expecting a simple love triangle, but what I got was a masterclass in storytelling. Every character's pain felt so real, and I cried so hard. The scenes between Chengxi and Jay were beautiful—this isn't a typical romance, but the love and loss are palpable.

The acting is superb, especially Roy Chiu, and the non-linear structure is well-executed. However, some plot points, like the insurance decision, felt a bit contrived, and the pacing dragged in places. Still, it's a heartfelt drama that deserves recognition for trying something different.

This film is a powerful commentary on how societal homophobia forces people into lives of lies, creating a chain of hurt that affects everyone. I appreciated that the mother was never demonized—her anger was justified. A deeply empathetic and necessary watch for understanding identity and forgiveness.

Visually stunning! The use of saturated reds and greens, plus the animated doodles that represent Chengxi's inner world, turned every scene into a painting. The cinematography alone makes this worth watching, but the story and acting match that artistry perfectly. A feast for the eyes and the heart.

The OST fits the emotional beats beautifully, especially the instrumental pieces that play during the flashback montages. I wish there had been more original songs, but the existing score really amplifies the bittersweet tone. A solid film that would have been even better with a more memorable theme song.
