Told through the innocent yet perceptive eyes of 11-year-old Kaoru, this heartwarming Japanese family drama turns the traditional household dynamic on its head. Kaoru’s family is often called ‘weird’ because his dad, Kenichi, is a devoted stay-at-home father while his mom, Kyoko, is a high-powered lawyer and the primary breadwinner. But to Kaoru, their love and support are anything but strange—they’re everything. With a tomboyish older sister, a kind neighbor who happens to be gay, and a father who teaches him that masculinity comes in many forms, Kaoru navigates school, friendship, and the everyday joys and struggles of growing up. More than a simple family tale, *Dare Yori mo Mama wo Aisu* (More Than Anyone, Love Mom) is a gentle, groundbreaking exploration of nontraditional roles, acceptance, and the quiet courage it takes to be yourself. It’s a lovingly crafted slice-of-life series that radiates warmth and affirms that a family’s strength lies not in who earns the paycheck, but in who shows up, day after day.

I went in expecting a typical BL but got so much more. This show made me cry happy tears multiple times. The way it shows a stay-at-home dad loving his family without any shame is revolutionary even today. Kaoru is the cutest narrator ever, and his relationship with the gay neighbor was handled with such care. A hidden gem.

For 2006, this drama was surprisingly progressive. The breadwinner mom/stay-at-home dad dynamic is treated as totally normal, and the gay supporting character isn't used for comedy or tragedy—just accepted. I appreciate how consent and emotional labor are discussed through everyday moments. A bit slow in the middle episodes, but the message is timeless.

The soft color palette and natural lighting give this series a warm, nostalgic feel that perfectly matches its gentle story. I loved the director’s choice to film many scenes from Kaoru’s low height—it makes you feel like a child again. The soundtrack is simple but effective. Not a visual masterpiece, but heartfelt and sincere.

I get why people love this, but the pacing really dragged for me. A lot of repetitive scenes of Kaoru staring at his parents, and the side stories (like the neighbor's romance) barely got any screen time. For an 11-episode series, I expected more development. Still, the concept is sweet and the acting from the kid is surprisingly solid.

The OST is a hidden treasure! That gentle piano theme that plays whenever Kaoru reflects on his family—absolutely beautiful. The opening song is super catchy for a mid-2000s J-drama too. I ended up searching for the full soundtrack after episode 3. It perfectly complements the warm, hopeful mood of the series.
