Set against the breathtaking yet unforgiving backdrop of a rural Philippine province, *DanDanSoy* is a raw, gut-wrenching miniseries that follows Cardo and Nathaniel, a deeply devoted gay couple whose six-year love is tested by the brutal realities of poverty and the COVID-19 pandemic. Living in a remote shack with no electricity and meager resources, they survive on subsistence farming and the occasional odd job. But when the pandemic strikes, their fragile stability shatters. Desperate to put food on the table, Cardo must venture into the virus-ridden town, risking his own health—and Nathaniel’s, who has underlying conditions. This is not a fluffy escape but a poignant, unflinching look at love in crisis: a story of two men fighting not just for their relationship, but for their lives. With stunning performances, a haunting soundtrack, and an intimate, candlelit aesthetic, *DanDanSoy* captures the claustrophobic fear of the pandemic era while celebrating the quiet, resilient beauty of a love that dares to hope in the darkest of times.

I'm still crying. This broke me in the best way possible. The love between Cardo and Nathaniel is so pure and real—their whispered 'my love' to each other, the tiny gestures, the way they hold on despite everything. The ending destroyed me, but I would watch it again in a heartbeat. If you want a BL that feels like real life, this is it.

Finally, a BL that doesn't romanticize poverty or ignore systemic issues. DanDanSoy lays bare the intersection of homophobia, class, and healthcare inequality in the Philippines. The scene where Cardo has to beg for medicine while Nathaniel dies is a devastating indictment of society. This is essential viewing for anyone who thinks BL is just fluff. A masterpiece of queer social realism.

I appreciate the effort to tackle COVID and poverty, but the execution felt slow and melodramatic. The candlelight-only lighting was atmospheric but sometimes made it hard to see what was happening. The final scene with the snot hanging—too much for me. However, the central story is undeniably powerful and the actors give it their all. A decent watch if you're prepared for a downer.

The cinematography is the star here. Shooting almost entirely by candlelight and natural firelight gives the series a painterly, almost Caravaggio-like quality. The dark, grainy frames mirror the couple's isolation and fear beautifully. The one overhead shot of the shack with the road behind it was a continuity error, but overall the visual storytelling is arresting and emotionally immersive.

The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and perfectly underscores the tragic mood. That recurring guitar theme that plays during the most heartbreaking moments—I can't get it out of my head. The opening song is also lovely. The music alone makes this series worth watching, even if the pacing is a bit slow for my taste.
