Augustus Vera, who goes by Age, is a young aspiring writer racing against a tight deadline for a literary workshop. His assignment: a short story about a gay orgy. But Age has never experienced one, and his writer's block stems from a lack of real-world understanding. As he struggles to bring authenticity to his characters' desires and intimacy, his research only leaves him more frustrated—unloading his pent-up energy on his typewriter. Enter Andrew, a bold and persuasive young man who pushes Age to step out of his comfort zone. Through Andrew and the supportive community of the workshop, Age is drawn into a world of sensual exploration and self-discovery. What begins as a purely literary exercise becomes a raw, intimate journey into the physical and emotional realities of queer sexuality. The film culminates in an audacious, artistically explicit orgy scene that bridges fiction and experience—offering a poetic, unflinching look at desire, creativity, and the courage to live what you write. ‘Cumming of Age’ is a daring Filipino short film that blends meta-narrative with erotic cinema, celebrating safe sex, artistic integrity, and the power of stepping beyond one's boundaries.

I absolutely loved the connection between Age and Andrew! Even in just 18 minutes, their chemistry feels electric and genuine. The way Andrew pushes Age to live his story is so tender and sexy. The final orgy scene is beautifully shot—raw but romantic. This is what queer cinema should be: honest and passionate.

The concept is interesting, but the execution feels rushed. The meta-narrative about writing is clever, but the character development is paper-thin—we barely know Age beyond his writer's block. The orgy scene, while shocking, seems to exist more for spectacle than story. It's a missed opportunity to dig deeper into the emotions behind the act.

The lighting and color grading alone make this a must-watch. Every frame is drenched in moody shadows and warm amber tones that mirror Age's internal darkness and desire. The camerawork during the orgy is fluid and intimate without being exploitative. Jayson Santos has an incredible eye—I'd watch anything he directs.

I appreciate how the film weaves safe-sex messages into its erotic core—condoms are visible, and there's a clear emphasis on mutual desire. It doesn't romanticize reckless behavior. At the same time, the power dynamic between Age and Andrew could have been explored more critically. Still, it's a bold step for queer Filipino cinema.

The ambient sound design and sparse score create a hypnotic atmosphere that fits the film's dreamlike quality. But I wish there were more memorable musical cues—the erotic scenes could have benefited from a stronger soundtrack to amplify the tension. Still, the audio work is competent and complements the visuals well.
