In this tender Chinese short film, two men fall deeply in love, only to face the devastating revelation that one of them is HIV-positive. Rather than letting the diagnosis tear them apart, they embark on a poignant journey of acceptance, education, and unwavering support. The film delicately explores the stigma surrounding the virus, the fear of rejection, and the power of unconditional love. Through intimate moments and honest conversations, 'Closer to You' celebrates the strength found in vulnerability and the courage to fight for a relationship against societal prejudice. It's a heartfelt, emotionally charged story that proves love can conquer even the most daunting obstacles, offering a rare and important representation of HIV within LGBTQ+ narratives in Chinese cinema.

I cried so hard but in the best way. The love between these two men is so genuine and raw—the way they hold each other and refuse to give up despite the HIV diagnosis melted my heart. It's a short film but it packs more emotion than many full-length dramas. A must-watch for anyone who believes love conquers all.

I appreciate the intention and the representation of HIV in a BL context, but the short runtime doesn't allow for proper character development or a nuanced exploration of the medical realities. It felt a bit too idealistic and rushed. Still, it's a sweet attempt that might resonate if you're not looking for depth.

This short film does an important job breaking down stigma around HIV and showing that people living with the virus deserve love and intimacy. The consent conversations and support dynamics are handled gently. However, I wish it had addressed the social and medical context more thoroughly instead of relying on emotional shorthand.

Visually, it's simple but effective—soft lighting and close-ups capture the vulnerability of the characters. The color palette leans warm, which contrasts nicely with the heavy topic. Not groundbreaking cinematography, but it serves the intimate story well. I just wish the editing had a bit more rhythm to enhance the emotional beats.

It tries to cover a heavy topic in under 20 minutes and ends up feeling like a public service announcement rather than a genuine love story. The acting is okay but the dialogue is stilted and the resolution is too tidy. For a film about HIV, it glosses over real challenges. Only for completists of Chinese BL shorts.
