Chubo no Alice: Bokutachi no Renai Jijo is a compact yet emotionally charged Japanese BL drama that distills the messy, tender reality of a long-term university relationship into a single, impactful episode. Reo and Eita are a devoted couple navigating the pressures of organic chemistry research and everyday life, but their bond is tested when a seemingly innocent moment of jealousy spirals into a full-blown argument. Amid the tension, a frantic search for an escaped cat forces them to set aside their pride and work together, revealing the deep, unspoken fears and insecurities that threaten their love. What makes this series special is its raw, grounded portrayal of queer intimacy and conflict—no melodrama, just two young men struggling to communicate. The chemistry between Suzuki Yuma and Horinouchi Satoshi feels authentically lived-in, and the brief runtime makes every scene count. It’s a heartfelt snapshot of a relationship in crisis, with a surprisingly hopeful resolution that will resonate with anyone who’s ever fought—and made up—with someone they love.

I’m a sucker for couples who actually talk through their problems, and Reo and Eita delivered. The jealousy scene hit close to home, but watching them chase that silly cat and slowly open up to each other made my heart swell. The kiss at the end? Perfect. More of this please.

The acting is solid and the premise is relatable, but the episode feels rushed—the argument resolves too neatly because of a cat. I wanted more depth around the underlying trust issues. It’s a decent watch for a rainy afternoon, but don’t expect groundbreaking storytelling.

Finally, a BL that shows a healthy, non-toxic fight. Reo and Eita don’t gaslight or manipulate each other—they just get jealous and then actually listen. The cat subplot is a clever metaphor for chasing after what matters. I appreciated the clear communication in the end. More dramas need this level of emotional maturity.

The color grading is warm and intimate, especially in the lab and the nighttime cat chase sequence. Close-ups of their faces during the argument are beautifully lit. It’s not a visual masterpiece, but for a one-episode budget, they made every frame count. I’d love to see this director do a full-length series.

The background piano piece that plays during the reconciliation scene is hauntingly beautiful—it perfectly captures the fragile hope after a fight. The opening song is also catchy and bittersweet. I immediately looked up the soundtrack. Music elevates already good acting into something truly memorable.
