In the quiet halls of a Chinese high school, two friends, Chen Xi and Lin Hao, navigate the tender, confusing territory of first love. When a gentle female classmate begins to show interest in Chen Xi, a delicate triangle forms, forcing the boys to confront their deeper feelings for each other. Meanwhile, a former friend resurfaces through fragmented flashbacks, hinting at unresolved emotions from their past. Adapted from the novel 'The Dark Night To Death', this micro-series trades elaborate production for raw intimacy, using a unique blend of still images, voiceovers, and short video clips to tell its story. The result is a hauntingly poetic portrait of adolescent yearning, where every whispered confession and stolen glance feels achingly real. Despite its shoestring budget, 'Cherries in Early Summer' captures the heart of a slow-burn romance built on mutual understanding and quiet courage. Will Chen Xi and Lin Hao find the words to bridge the gap between friendship and something more? This is a story for those who believe that love, no matter how simply told, can still leave a lasting mark.

I cried so much. I know it's just pictures and voices, but the way Chen Xi and Lin Hao spoke to each other—I felt every word. Their love is so pure and painful. The ending wrecked me. For a 20-minute series, it packs more heart than most full-length BLs.

The story is barely there. Two guys like each other, a girl gets in the way, flashbacks to a past friend—everything is told through disjointed stills and voiceovers. The video parts look like they were shot on a phone from 2010. I appreciate the effort, but this is more of a proof-of-concept than a finished drama.

Yes, it's mostly slideshow, but the composition of those stills is surprisingly artistic. The lighting, the framing of the characters in empty classrooms and cherry tree shadows—it feels like a graphic novel come to life. I wish they had the budget to film it fully, but this stylistic choice has its own charm.

The series barely touches on consent—the boys' relationship feels mutual, but the female friend's unrequited affection is handled a bit awkwardly. I also note the 'prolonged nudity' tag, but it's tastefully done and not exploitative. For such a short piece, it's okay, but real BL can do better at discussing boundaries.
