Maeda Taiki works in a bustling Tokyo clothing store, convinced he’s unattractive and socially awkward. He harbors a secret crush on the handsome, kind-hearted shopping center manager Yagii Haruhisa—who somehow reciprocates. This sweetly awkward Japanese BL film breathes life into an anxiety-ridden protagonist and the patient love that helps him open up. What follows is a fast-paced, gently humorous romance that tackles real mental health struggles head-on, proving that even the most self-doubting heart can learn to accept tenderness. Adapted from a manga, *Candy and Kiss* delivers a condensed but emotionally resonant story about self-worth, communication, and love’s ability to quiet inner demons.

I absolutely adored this movie. Yes, the acting is a bit rough, but Maeda’s anxiety is so relatable and Yagii is the perfect supportive boyfriend. Their chemistry made my heart flutter, and the ending was pure happiness. If you love sweet, uncomplicated BL, don’t miss it!

The premise is decent, but the execution is full of clichés and awkward pauses. The characters’ problems are solved too easily, and the supporting cast are just cardboard cutouts. I appreciate the attempt to address mental health, but the rushed pacing really hurt the impact.

It’s frustrating to see a BL film where the actors clearly avoid kissing. The chemistry is there, but the physical hesitation feels homophobic—like same-gender affection is still taboo. For a 2015 release, it’s disappointing. Representation deserves better than awkward, half-hearted intimacy.

The lack of background music is really noticeable. There are long stretches of silence where a score could have heightened the emotion. That said, the sparse use of a sweet piano theme during key moments works well. A bit more musical investment would have elevated the whole experience.
