Set in the bustling streets of late-90s Taipei, 'Boys for Beauty' is a tender, documentary-style film that offers a raw and intimate look into the lives of three gay teenagers navigating love, identity, and family. As one young man prepares to study abroad, he must face the painful decision to break up with his boyfriend, believing distance will only breed heartache. Another, lonely and yearning for connection, seeks affection in fleeting encounters that leave him empty. The third moonlights as a drag performer, finding freedom and community on stage while hiding his true self from his traditional family. Blending real-life interviews with naturalistic fiction, the film captures the universal struggles of queer youth—the fear of rejection, the thrill of first love, and the courage to be seen. With its unflinching honesty and deeply human storytelling, 'Boys for Beauty' stands as a rare gem of Taiwanese queer cinema, preserving a pivotal moment of social change with warmth and authenticity.

I went in expecting an old documentary and came out with my heart full. The way each boy's story weaves together—especially the drag performer finding his light—is so tender. It's not your typical BL fantasy, but the realness of their yearning made me cry. A hidden gem.

I appreciate the historical value, but the pacing drags in the middle, and some of the improvised dialogue feels aimless. The third storyline about the drag performer is the most compelling; the other two feel underdeveloped. It's more a time capsule than a fully polished narrative.

The grainy 16mm film and natural light capture 1999 Taipei with such intimacy—like flipping through someone's diary. The camera lingers on faces during quiet moments, and the drag stage is shot with a beautiful, raw energy. A masterclass in documentary-style visual storytelling.

For its time, this film bravely shows the emotional cost of hiding—especially in a conservative family setting. The lack of explicit content keeps the focus on consent and emotional safety. I wish it had addressed more intersectional issues, but as a 1999 artifact, it's a valuable conversation starter.

The soundtrack is sparse but intentionally chosen—soft guitar and ambient city sounds that feel like a memory. There's a heartbreaking scene with a forgotten pop ballad playing from a radio. It's not a musical feast, but the music that's there perfectly amplifies the melancholy.
