Ho Yin, a gay university student still nursing the wounds of a high school heartbreak, channels his pain into art by writing a play for his Drama Society—a thinly veiled retelling of his own failed romance. When charismatic actor Boris is cast opposite him, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur as they rehearse intimate scenes together. What starts as creative collaboration quickly blooms into a tentative relationship, but Ho Yin struggles to separate his lingering feelings for his ex from the new emotions Boris stirs in him. This delicate, low-budget Hong Kong miniseries—produced in connection with the Gay Games HK 2023—explores the fragile boundary between cathartic storytelling and genuine connection. Over four short episodes, 'Boys' asks whether we can truly heal through reenacting past pain, or if we risk hurting those who help us perform it. Shot on a shoestring with earnest performances and a reflective tone, it's a quietly bittersweet tale of self-discovery, the power of dramatic expression, and the danger of mistaking stage chemistry for real love.

I went in with low expectations because of the short runtime, but I actually got quite emotional. Ho Yin and Boris had this sweet, tentative chemistry that felt real for a college crush. Yes, it’s rough around the edges, but the bittersweet ending hit me hard. A hidden little gem if you’re a sucker for stories about love and art blurring together.

This is basically a student film with promotional inserts for the Gay Games. The acting is stiff—Boris’s constant facial twitching was distracting—and the plot is wafer-thin. The meta ‘play within a show’ conceit is interesting, but it’s executed with zero subtlety. Worth a look only as a curiosity piece.

I appreciate the attempt to use different aspect ratios to separate reality from the play, but overall the cinematography is basically non-existent. The Hong Kong skyline shots in the credits were nice, but the rest looks like it was shot on a phone without much thought to lighting or composition. It’s hard to get immersed when the visuals are this flat.

I liked that the show didn’t pretend the relationship was perfect, but it raises uncomfortable questions about consent and emotional manipulation. Ho Yin essentially uses Boris to process his ex, and Boris gets seriously hurt. That’s a mature theme, but the series doesn’t explore it deeply enough—it just ends. For such a short series, it could have done more with its ethical dilemma.

The music is okay—generic acoustic tracks that fit the mood but nothing memorable. I was hoping for a standout OST to elevate the emotional scenes, but it’s pretty forgettable. Combined with the weak production values, even the sound design feels amateur. Not a series I’d rewatch for its music.
