Dreams of K-pop glory and a forbidden romance collide in 'Boyband', a Thai series that takes you behind the scenes of an idol competition with a BL twist. Top, a hardworking young man from the provinces, lands a spot in a brutal audition for World Star Entertainment, run by the formidable Khun Serena. He quickly clashes with Juju, a wealthy and impulsive trainee, but their rivalry soon blurs into a secret, rule-breaking attraction—because the company strictly forbids artists from dating. As the trainees endure grueling dance and vocal training, cutthroat elimination rounds, and the constant pressure of industry politics, Top and Juju must navigate their budding feelings while fighting for their place in the final boyband. Featuring cameos from beloved BL stars, this series layers comedy, angst, and a critical look at the dark side of the entertainment machine—greed, homophobia, and exploitation. But at its heart, it’s a story about two young men running toward each other against all odds.

Despite the rushed ending, I absolutely adored Top and Juju’s forbidden romance. Their chemistry is electric, and the scenes where Top chases after Juju on a motorcycle had me squealing. Yes, the romance is slow to build, but when it hits, it’s worth the wait. The cameo appearances were a sweet bonus.

This had so much potential but completely fumbled. 6 episodes are far too short for all the subplots—the romance is nonexistent for 4 episodes, then suddenly they’re confessing. The final episode is a mess of a cliffhanger that feels like a trailer. The only thing that worked was the acting; everything else was rushed and incoherent.

I respect the series for directly addressing homophobia and the exploitative side of the entertainment industry—things many BLs gloss over. The power dynamics between Serena and her ex-husband were chillingly realistic. However, the execution was so compressed that these themes felt like afterthoughts. A longer season could have done justice to the important conversations it tries to start.

The soundtrack is genuinely good—the original songs and dance numbers are the highlight of this show. I still hum the main theme weeks later. But as a series, it’s a letdown. The music deserved a better narrative to support it. If you just want to listen to some catchy idol tracks, fine. But don’t come for a coherent story.
