Born Beautiful is a poignant Filipino dramedy that follows Barbs, a transgender woman grappling with grief and identity after the sudden death of her closest friend. In a desperate attempt to start over, she decides to live as a straight man named Bobby—a choice that sends her life into a dizzying spiral. As Bobby, she navigates unexpected romantic entanglements with her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, Michaelangelo, and reconnects with her own ex, Greg. But the biggest twist comes when a woman claims she’s pregnant with Barbs’ child, forcing her to confront the messy consequences of her new identity. Set against the backdrop of a funeral home and the sex industry, this film is a raw, heartfelt exploration of love, loss, and the courage to be yourself. Blending humor with heavy emotion, Born Beautiful celebrates LGBTQ+ resilience and the messy, beautiful complexity of human connection.

I went in expecting a light BL and got a beautiful, messy rollercoaster of emotions. Barbs and Michelangelo's chemistry felt so real—I was rooting for them even when everything was falling apart. The ending left me teary but hopeful. Not your typical love story, and that's why I loved it.

The premise is bold, but the execution felt clunky. Too many subplots (the ex, the pregnancy, the funeral home) crammed into one film, leaving little room for any to breathe. The pacing drags in the middle. I appreciate the representation, but the story needed tighter editing.

This film tackles complex consent dynamics and the pressure to conform to binary gender roles. Barbs' journey is compelling, but I wish the narrative had spent more time on the emotional impact of her transition on her relationships. Still, it's a brave, important conversation starter within BL.

Visually, this film is stunning. The warm, moody lighting in the funeral home scenes contrasts beautifully with the bright, chaotic street life. Each frame feels carefully composed. The director's use of color to mirror Barbs' internal conflict is brilliant. A treat for the eyes.

The soundtrack really elevated this film for me—especially the acoustic ballads during the more introspective moments. The music captures the melancholic yet resilient spirit of Barbs' journey. I've been humming the main theme for days. More BL films need this level of musical curation.
