Chosen Home is a warm, offbeat Japanese dramedy that redefines what it means to build a family. When the hopelessly romantic and slightly clumsy Hatano Genichi, an older gay man, crosses paths with the aloof and guarded schoolteacher Sakuta, and the sharp but troubled high school student Hotaru, their lives collide in the most unexpected way. After a chance encounter over a tub of ice cream, this unlikely trio ends up living under the same roof, each carrying their own baggage: Hatano longs for a love that society rarely validates, Sakuta struggles with cynicism and a hidden past, and Hotaru feels abandoned by her pursuing parents. What follows is a gently hilarious and deeply moving journey of connection, where late-night talks, shared meals, and small acts of kindness slowly chip away at their walls. Blending quirky humor with poignant social commentary, Chosen Home isn't just about romance—it's a celebration of chosen family, late-in-life love, and the quiet revolution of living authentically. Perfect for viewers who crave realistic, character-driven storytelling over melodrama.

I was so worried this would be another generic BL, but Chosen Home completely stole my heart. Hatano and Sakuta’s love story is so quiet and real—they don't need dramatic confessions; just sharing a meal or sitting in silence says everything. The way they slowly learn to trust each other made me tear up. This is the kind of mature romance I’ve been craving!

I appreciate what the drama tries to do—it's refreshingly realistic—but the pacing really dragged for me. Some episodes felt like they were spinning wheels, and a few side plots (like the mother) didn’t land as well. The main couple's development also felt rushed in the later episodes. Still, the writing is sharp and the characters are well-drawn; I just wish the editor had tightened it up.

Finally, a drama that treats a gay relationship with the same normalcy as any other! No fetishization, no dramatic coming-out trauma—just two men figuring out life and love together. I also loved how it handled Hotaru's story, showing parental neglect and the sexism she faces at school. The show passes the Bechdel test multiple times and addresses homophobia without making it the entire plot. A very respectful, socially conscious piece of television.

Visually, Chosen Home is a quiet masterpiece. The color palette shifts from muted grays in the lonely scenes to warm golds and soft greens as the family bonds grow. The framing often isolates characters in their own shot, then slowly brings them together in the frame—a beautiful visual metaphor for found family. The lighting in the shared kitchen scenes is like a warm hug. Not flashy, but incredibly effective.
