Welcome to the world of 'Bokura Teki ni wa Risou no Rakugo', a truly unique Japanese BL series that blends the ancient art of rakugo (traditional comedic storytelling) with modern queer romance. The story follows a fudanshi (a male fan of BL) storyteller who crafts enchanting tales, which are then brought to life by a rotating cast of performers from a BL-specializing rakugo group. Each episode features a different pair of rakugo artists, each with their own rich personality and emotional baggage, performing a love story that unfolds both on stage and behind the scenes. As they narrate the romantic dialogues of their characters, the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur—sparking real feelings, tensions, and connections between the performers themselves. Through a mix of humor, heart, and the rhythmic cadence of rakugo, this series explores love in all its forms: shy confessions, unspoken longing, and the courage to perform your true self. It's an experimental, slow-burn drama that celebrates both Japanese tradition and LGBTQ+ identity, offering a gentle, whimsical escape for viewers seeking something off the beaten path.

I really wanted to love this more because the idea of rakugo + BL is so unique! The chemistry between some pairs was genuinely sweet, especially when they acted out the confessions. But the episodes felt too short and the stories too disconnected for me to really fall in love with any one couple. Still, I appreciate the effort and the Japanese BL style.

This series is a slog. The rakugo performances are hard to follow even with subtitles, and the romance feels forced because we barely get to know the characters before they're replaced. The pacing is glacial and the emotional payoffs are weak. I get that it's meant to be artsy, but for me it was just boring. Hard pass if you want a coherent love story.

I have to say, the show looks lovely—soft lighting, kimono details, and the intimate stage setups are beautifully shot. But visuals alone can't carry 13 episodes. The storytelling felt disjointed and I struggled to care about any of the pairs. It's a shame because the concept had so much potential. A solid average for me.

I appreciate that the show tries to explore male intimacy through a traditional art form, but the execution is very surface-level. The relationships often rely on heteronormative tropes (one 'dominant' storyteller, one shy) and there's little discussion of actual consent or queer identity beyond the BL fantasy. It feels more like a fetishized performance than authentic representation.

The background music and the traditional shamisen melodies are genuinely gorgeous—they create a really peaceful, nostalgic atmosphere. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that kept me watching. The romance parts fell flat for me and the episodic format made it hard to invest. If you're in it just for the vibe and the music, it's okay, but don't expect a gripping drama.
