In this poignant 2008 Japanese BL film, music student Maki becomes utterly captivated by Ruiku, a gifted but emotionally distant pianist. Despite Ruiku's cold demeanor, Maki—outgoing and confident in his sexuality—pursues him with persistent charm. Their worlds intertwine through the delicate melodies of Debussy, setting the stage for a transformative romance. However, when a hand injury threatens Ruiku's pivotal exam, Maki makes a devastating sacrifice involving a predatory professor, forcing both young men to confront the true cost of love. A bittersweet tale of courtly love and selflessness, *Melody of Our Love* unfolds like a haunting piano piece—beautiful, melancholic, and achingly unresolved.

I'm a sucker for a good soundtrack, and Debussy's Clair de Lune never sounded more heartbreaking. The piano scenes alone justify watching—the way each note mirrors Maki's longing gave me chills. Yes, the ending feels rushed, but the music ties everything together beautifully.

This is the purest, most devastating love story I've seen in a while. Maki's unwavering devotion to Ruiku made me cry—what he sacrifices for that cold pianist is heartbreakingly romantic. The chemistry is subtle but electric. I just wish we got closure on their future.

The premise had potential, but the execution falls apart after the midpoint. Maki's 'sacrifice' is disgusting and poorly explained, and Ruiku never connecting the dots made him look dumb. Also, the sudden shift from Ruiku being cold to teaching Maki felt contrived. A frustrating watch.

Visually, this film is a gem—soft lighting, muted color palettes, and intimate framing that makes every piano lesson feel like a confession. The director uses reflections and shadows brilliantly to convey isolation. A feast for eyes, even if the story stumbles.

I appreciate the attempt at a tragic romance, but the teacher's predatory behavior is handled irresponsibly. Maki's 'choice' to trade his body is presented as noble rather than coercive, and the film never condemns the abuse. For a BL in 2008, it's disappointing to see such problematic power dynamics romanticized.
