Get ready for a wedding day unlike any other! 'We’re Both Grooms' throws you straight into the chaotic, hilarious, and deeply touching wedding of Seto Ryosuke, an earnest elementary school teacher, and Aikawa Mizuki, a sweet lemon farmer. The trouble begins moments before the ceremony when Mizuki discovers a bombshell: Ryosuke has never told his family, friends, or relatives that he's marrying a man. What follows is a whirlwind 50 minutes of cringe-worthy encounters, surprising confessions, and heartfelt moments as both families collide. This Japanese special masterfully balances laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional depth, exploring themes of coming out, parental acceptance, and the courage it takes to be true to yourself. With its charming leads, clever lemon metaphors, and a beautiful seaside setting, this is a short but unforgettable ride that proves love can conquer even the most awkward of family reunions.

I am absolutely obsessed with Ryosuke and Mizuki! Their chemistry is so natural and sweet – I was rooting for them from the first scene. The way they support each other through all the family chaos melted my heart. No kissing needed; their eyes and smiles say everything. I've already watched it three times!

Look, I wanted to like this more, but the central premise is just too absurd. You're telling me Ryosuke dated Mizuki for two years, planned a wedding, and never once told his family his fiancé is a guy? That's not a comedy setup, that's a major red flag. The flashbacks felt rushed and the father's redemption arc was unconvincing. It's cute, but logic takes a holiday here.

I appreciate how this special tackles the very real fear of coming out to conservative parents without demonizing anyone. Ryosuke's failure to communicate is shown as a flaw, not a joke. The film doesn't shy away from the emotional cost of hiding your identity, and the finale's message about embracing all 'shades' of people is beautifully executed. It's a rare BL that feels educational and empowering.

Visually, this is a treat. The color grading with all those warm yellows and blues – the lemon farm scenes are gorgeous. The way the grooms' outfits complement each other (even their casual hoodies!) shows real attention to detail. The seaside ceremony backdrop is stunning. The directing isn't perfect, but for a low-budget special, the look is surprisingly polished and pleasing.
