What happens when a relationship loses its spark and a literal blackout becomes the only way to find it again? Set against the cobblestone streets and lantern-lit canals of Lijiang, Yunnan, *Blackout* follows a long-term couple, Xiao Chen and Wei Ming, who have drifted into a monotonous routine. Hoping to rekindle the magic of their first meeting, they embark on a romantic getaway to the ancient city. But when a city-wide power outage plunges them into darkness, the forced intimacy and vulnerability that follows reveals buried secrets, hidden desires, and the raw edges of their love. With only four tightly-packed episodes, this short-form Chinese BL leans into atmospheric storytelling and emotional tension, offering a bittersweet exploration of whether love can survive when the lights go out — literally and metaphorically. Is this blackout the end of their story, or a chance to start over?

I appreciated the Lijiang cinematography and the raw emotional beats, but the first 30 minutes felt disjointed and the 'drunk cheating' angle was confusing. It picked up a lot in the last 10 minutes — if only they'd trimmed the early mess. A solid 7 for effort and visual style.

This is such an underrated gem! The way the blackout forces Xiao Chen and Wei Ming to finally talk — without the usual romantic clichés — felt so authentic. I cried when they held hands in the dark. Yes, it's short, but every scene matters. More BLs should take risks like this.

While the premise is intriguing, I was uncomfortable with the non-con touching and the way drunkenness was used to blur consent. The show doesn't address these behaviors critically enough. Good acting can't fix a moral blind spot. I hope future BLs handle such themes with more care.

For a 45-minute watch, this packs a surprising punch. I loved the claustrophobic tension during the blackout and the way the setting itself became a character. The ending left me hungry for more — why tease a cliffhanger when you only have 4 episodes? Still, highly recommended for a moody emotional ride.

The background score is hauntingly beautiful — a mix of soft piano and ambient street sounds really sells the isolation. But the story felt like a rough draft. Too many unanswered questions (who was the guy in the bar?), and the cliffhanger felt cheap. Watch it for the music and the Lijiang shots.
