In the quiet aftermath of profound loss, Typhoon enters university carrying the invisible weight of a childhood shattered by familial cruelty and the tragic death of his beloved sister. When fate reunites him with Tonfah, the older boy who was once his next-door protector and childhood sanctuary, the reunion stirs buried emotions—but also reopens a painful secret Typhoon has tried to bury. Rather than push him away, Tonfah becomes a gentle, patient anchor, slowly rebuilding trust through unwavering support and a surprising secret admirer game of letters and gifts. Typhoon’s loyal friend group—North, East, and Dao—forms a fierce support system, helping him reclaim his self-worth without relying on a single savior. Adapted from Howlsairy’s novel and directed with intimate restraint, 'Beside the Sky' is a quietly devastating slow-burn romance that celebrates healing, honest communication, and the courage to let love find you again.

Tonfah and Typhoon are everything I’ve ever wanted in a BL couple. No stupid misunderstandings, just pure, patient love. The way Fah teases Phoon after discovering he’s the letter sender? I screamed. Their chemistry is so natural and warm—I rewatched the Japan arc three times already. Absolute comfort couple material!

I appreciate the emotional depth, but let’s be real—the pacing drags in the middle episodes. The father villain is cartoonishly evil and feels ripped from a soap opera. Typhoon’s trauma is well-acted, but by episode 5 I was begging for something to actually happen. A solid slow-burn, but not groundbreaking.

Every frame is composed like a painting. The color grading shifts from cold blues during Typhoon’s panic moments to warm golden tones when Fah enters—absolute visual storytelling. The door scene with the light cutting through the gap? Cinematic perfection. Studio Wabi Sabi outdid themselves. I’d watch this on mute just for the visuals.

As a huge fan of Howlsairy’s novel, I was nervous about the adaptation. They kept the core emotional beats and even improved the friend group’s role, which was underdeveloped in the book. But they cut the NC scenes (predictably) and softened some of Fah’s more intense moments. Still, Tonliew and Bever bring the characters to life beautifully—I’ll take it.

What a relief to see a BL that prioritizes consent and emotional safety. Typhoon’s journey is not about being ‘fixed’ by a love interest—his friends and his own choices empower him. Tonfah is the ultimate green flag: he waits, he listens, he never pressures. This is the kind of healthy relationship representation we need more of.
