In this poignant Taiwanese drama, two same-sex couples—lesbian partners Cindy and Joanne, and gay couple Charles and Tim—join forces to create a family through surrogacy in London. But when Cindy loses one of her twin babies, the emotional fallout shakes the foundation of their unconventional family. Doubts and mistrust surface between Cindy and Joanne, forcing Cindy to flee back to Taiwan, where she seeks solace from a childhood friend. As she grapples with what it truly means to be a family, she must confront her partners and the painful secrets threatening to tear them apart. Blending raw emotion with a heartfelt exploration of parenthood, identity, and love against all odds, 'Bao Bao' is a tender, thought-provoking journey that celebrates the resilience of queer families—even when society isn't ready to accept them.

I cried so much watching this! The love between Cindy and Joanne felt so real—even when they were hurting, you could feel their bond. The way they navigate trust after losing the baby broke my heart, but the ending gave me hope. Perfect for anyone who believes love can overcome anything.

The film has a noble heart and important themes, but the pacing drags in the middle, and some character decisions feel forced for drama. The gay couple (Charles and Tim) is woefully underdeveloped—they’re more plot devices than people. Still, the lead actresses deliver strong performances that almost save it.

As a researcher on queer family structures, I found 'Bao Bao' incredibly honest about the legal and emotional hurdles same-sex couples face, especially in Taiwan before marriage equality. The film doesn’t shy away from the pressure to conform, nor does it villainize anyone. A must-watch for anyone interested in reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ identity.

The cinematography is gorgeous—the cold, gray London contrasts beautifully with the warm, golden Taiwan scenes. There’s a shot of Cindy walking alone through a hospital corridor that stays with me. But the visual storytelling sometimes outpaces the script, leaving emotional beats feeling rushed. Still, a visually rich experience.

I came for the gay couple Charles and Tim, and honestly they don't get nearly enough screen time. What little we see of them is sweet and complicated—they’re navigating their own insecurities about parenthood. I wish the film had balanced the two couples better, but the few scenes they share are touching and well-acted.
