After a devastating breakup with his fiancée, famous YouTuber with over 782,520 followers flees to the idyllic island of Koh Larn to heal his shattered heart. Expecting solitude, he instead finds himself entangled with a mysterious mute man and a group of obsessive novelists who seem determined to script a romance between the two strangers. As the line between reality and fiction blurs, this short film uses breathtaking ocean vistas and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to explore themes of heartbreak, intrusion, and the awkward pursuit of connection. A slow, contemplative journey that feels more like a tourism ad than a traditional BL, Bali Hai offers a visually striking but narratively uneven escape.

I appreciate what they tried to do with the meta-narrative, but the execution was messy. The ocean views are gorgeous and the OST is lovely, but the five novelists stalking the leads made me deeply uncomfortable. I had to skip around (using the watch suggestions from another review) to get a semblance of a love story. Not for everyone.

As a cinematography nerd, I was blown away by the visuals. Every frame of Koh Larn looks like a luxury travel brochure—the golden hour light, the crystal water, the remote beaches. If only the story matched the beauty. The characters are stereotypes and the plot barely holds together, but I’ll rewatch just for the scenery and music.

I’m a sucker for a good OST, and this one delivered. The piano and strings during the hero’s solo beach walks gave me chills. Yes, the story is weird and the acting from the side characters is stiff, but the emotional tone carried by the music made me feel the heartbreak anyway. Ignore the stalker subplot and just listen.

I came for a sweet romance and got a bizarre tourism ad with no chemistry at all. The leads barely interact, the mute character is used as a prop, and the novelists' stalking is just creepy. The only moment that felt even slightly romantic was the imagined beach picnic—and that lasted ten seconds. Huge disappointment.

The film’s portrayal of stalking as a quirky plot device is troubling. The novelists invade private moments and manipulate two strangers into a relationship without consent—this is not cute, it’s a red flag. On the positive side, I liked that they included a mute character, but the representation was shallow; we never learned anything about him. Needs more awareness.
