In the neon-lit streets of modern China, two estranged childhood friends, Chen Yi (Jin Ze) and Lin Feng (Huang Sheng Jie), are unexpectedly reunited under the glare of a film crew's lights. Chen Yi, now a reserved cinematographer, and Lin Feng, a charismatic but troubled actor, must navigate their suppressed feelings and a painful past while working on a passion project. As they rekindle their bond through late-night script sessions and stolen glances behind the camera, buried secrets threaten to tear them apart. With support from a quirky best friend (Ying Zhen Nan) and a no-nonsense producer (Jessie Yan), Backlight is a tender exploration of second chances, artistic vulnerability, and the courage to love openly. Shot with a dreamy, cinematic aesthetic, this Chinese web series captures the quiet intensity of a love that refuses to stay hidden.

I'm an absolute sucker for second-chance romances, and Backlight delivered everything I wanted. Jin Ze and Huang Sheng Jie have this quiet, intense chemistry that made my heart ache. The way they communicated through looks and small gestures? Perfection. A must-watch for slow-burn lovers.

The emotional core is strong, but I found the pacing a bit uneven—episodes 3-4 dragged with too much artsy filler. The plot is simple and predictable, but the performances elevate it. Solid watch, just don't expect a complex narrative.

As a cinematography nerd, I was blown away by how every scene was lit and composed. The backlighting motifs aren't just pretty—they literally tell the story of characters coming out of shadows. This is one of the most visually poetic BLs I've seen in years.

This was my first Chinese BL and I really enjoyed it! The romance felt natural, not forced, and there was no unnecessary drama. I loved the supportive friend character—he added so much warmth. Just wish there were more kisses!

I appreciate the attempt at a healthy relationship, but I wish the show had directly addressed the power imbalance between the director and actor. It's brushed aside as 'fate' which feels a bit lazy. Still, the emotional honesty in the second half redeemed it somewhat.
