Set against the hazy, sun-drenched backdrop of 1970s southern Japan, *Backlight* is a quietly devastating summer romance that lingers like a half-remembered dream. Akira, a reserved high school student, invites his classmate Yoshioka to spend the holidays at his family’s seaside home, hoping to bridge the distance between them. But the idyllic coastal village holds ghosts of its own: two childhood female friends – each carrying their own unspoken feelings – weave in and out of the boys’ fragile bond, complicating every stolen glance and hesitant touch. As cicadas buzz and the tide ebbs, Akira must navigate a world where love cannot be named, let alone spoken. Director [unknown] crafts a lush, atmospheric portrait of first love under the shadow of societal silence. With its bittersweet pacing, soft-focus cinematography, and a score that aches like a summer sunset, *Backlight* is less a conventional BL film and more a melancholy mood piece – a gentle, heartbreaking tribute to the loves we leave behind.

I went in knowing the rating was low, but I genuinely loved the aching tension between Akira and Yoshioka. Every stolen glance and brush of fingers felt electric. Yes, it’s slow – but that’s the point! This is a love story told in silences and sunsets. If you’re patient, it pays off beautifully.

Beautiful to look at, but the screenplay meanders so much it nearly drowns. The female characters exist mostly to push the boys apart without clear motivation. And the ending? Frustratingly vague. I appreciate the effort at realism, but I need a bit more plot meat on these aesthetic bones.

Every frame of *Backlight* could be a photograph in a ‘70s Japanese photo book. The golden hour lighting, the grainy texture, the costumes – it’s a visual feast. I didn’t mind the slow pace because I was too busy soaking in the atmosphere. A masterclass in mood.

While the period setting explains the closet dynamics, the film never critically examines the pressure Yoshioka is under. Akira’s pursuit borders on invasive at times, and the lack of clear communication is romanticized rather than questioned. For a modern audience, it feels uncomfortably close to coercion in the name of love.

The music is the real heart of this film. That wistful acoustic guitar theme and the way it swells during the beach scene? Chills. Unfortunately, the sound design sometimes overwhelms the dialogue. I’d recommend watching with good headphones and just letting the soundtrack wash over you – even if the story doesn’t fully deliver.
