When Haru moves from the quiet suburbs of Saitama to the bustling streets of Tokyo, he’s determined to start fresh and explore parts of himself he’s kept hidden. On his first day, a chance encounter at a laundromat introduces him to Toma, a warm and patient stranger who offers a helping hand. The next night, Haru nervously steps into a gay bar for the first time, hoping to connect with the queer community he’s always longed to be part of. There, he stumbles into a series of unexpected meetings that draw him back to Toma, sparking a tentative, tender bond. As Haru navigates the highs and lows of self-discovery, new friendships, and the thrill of a slow-burning romance, Back When We Were Still captures the poignant beauty of first love and the courage it takes to embrace your true self. With its gentle pacing, heartfelt performances, and a refreshingly honest look at queer life in Japan, this short series is a quiet gem that lingers long after the credits roll.

I am completely smitten! Haru and Toma's relationship feels so real and tender—every glance, every accidental touch made my heart flutter. The laundromat scene was pure magic. This is exactly the kind of sweet, slow-burn romance I live for. Absolutely loved it!

It's a charming series, but I found the pacing a bit too leisurely for my taste. Some episodes could have been trimmed, and the side characters felt underdeveloped. However, the main couple’s chemistry kept me watching, and the ending was satisfying enough. A solid, if unremarkable, watch.

This show is a visual treat! The soft lighting in Haru's apartment, the neon glow of the gay bar, and the muted autumn tones throughout create such a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Every frame feels carefully composed. The cinematography elevates even the simplest conversations into something beautiful.

I appreciate how the series handles Haru’s exploration of his identity without rushing or sensationalizing it. The conversations around consent and boundaries—especially in the bar scenes—felt natural and respectful. It’s refreshing to see a BL that prioritizes emotional safety and self-acceptance over drama.

The background music is lovely, with a gentle piano theme that perfectly captures the mood of each scene. The ending song is catchy too, though I wish there were a few more distinct musical moments. Still, the OST complements the story beautifully without overpowering it.
