In this heartwarming Taiwanese film, Danny (Barney Cheng), a Taiwanese-American man, and his American partner Tate (Patrick Lee) share a simple dream: to start a family. But their path to parenthood is anything but simple. Navigating the intricate legal and emotional maze of international surrogacy, they face an unexpected hurdle in the form of Danny's well-meaning but wildly overbearing mother (Gua A Leh). Ma has her own ideas about how the baby should be raised—and she's not afraid to meddle. What unfolds is a hilarious, touching, and often poignant clash of cultures, generations, and expectations. As Danny and Tate fight to maintain their relationship and their vision of family, they discover that love, patience, and a little bit of chaos are the true ingredients for building a home. Baby Steps is a rare gem that blends sharp comedy with genuine emotional depth, celebrating queer love and the messy, beautiful process of creating a family against all odds.

I absolutely adored this movie! Danny and Tate are such a sweet couple, and their journey to have a baby had me laughing and crying at the same time. The way they support each other through Ma's crazy antics is so heartwarming. A beautiful, feel-good watch for anyone who loves love.

I wanted to like this more, but the plot meanders quite a bit, and some of the comedic conflicts feel forced. The surrogacy storyline is interesting but rarely gets the depth it deserves. That said, the performances are charming, and the ending is satisfying enough. A decent time-waster, but nothing groundbreaking.

The film has a lovely, warm color palette that makes the Taiwan setting feel cozy and inviting. Some of the framing in the family home scenes is really clever—you can feel the claustrophobia of Ma's overbearing love. Not a visual masterpiece, but far better than many indie BL productions. Easy on the eyes.

The score is light and jazzy, perfectly matching the film's comedic yet emotional tone. There's a beautiful piano theme that plays during the couple's quiet moments—it really tugged at my heartstrings. The soundtrack doesn't overwhelm the story, but it elevates every scene it touches. I'd buy the OST if it existed.
