In this rare and poignant 1990 Japanese film, the disappearance of a male detective named Kobori sets off a tense, emotionally charged investigation. His close friend, Detective Oki, becomes consumed by suspicion, relentlessly accusing the enigmatic Miyata of involvement. As Oki digs deeper, the line between investigation and obsession blurs, forcing both men to confront undeniable truths about loss, loyalty, and a forbidden attraction that simmers beneath the surface. Blending a noir-style mystery with a tender, slow-burn romance, *Atsuki Kokoro wo* is a groundbreaking work that explores queer identity in a conservative era. The film’s raw performances and haunting atmosphere make it a must-see for fans of classic LGBTQ+ cinema.

I can't believe I only discovered this gem now. The way Oki and Miyata's eyes speak volumes when words fail is pure poetry. Their chemistry is so raw and real – it left me breathless. A beautiful, aching love story that deserved so much more attention.

As a mystery, it's frustrating – the investigation logic is flimsy and the ending feels deliberately vague just to seem artsy. The emotional core carries it, but I found myself wishing the screenplay had been tighter. Still, I respect what it tried to do.

The black-and-white cinematography (though the original might be color? I saw a restored print) uses shadows and rain beautifully to mirror the characters' internal turmoil. Each frame could be a photograph. For a low-budget 1990 film, the visual storytelling is stunning.

Interestingly, the film sidesteps typical BL power imbalances because both leads are adults with agency. However, Oki's obsessive behavior borders on harassment and is never directly addressed as problematic. Important to watch with a critical eye, but a valuable historical document of queer desire in Japanese cinema.
