Kohei, a former competitive swimmer turned ordinary family man, finds his world upended when his wife suddenly demands a divorce. Struggling to reconcile his past identity and present responsibilities as a father to his teenage daughter, he stumbles upon a fateful encounter with Yutaka, a beautiful and mysterious young man. What begins as a chance meeting quickly evolves into a complex, passionate, and deeply emotional connection that forces Kohei to confront his suppressed desires and the rigidity of societal norms. Set against the backdrop of suburban Japan, this raw and unflinching Japanese pink film explores themes of midlife crisis, self-discovery, and the transformative power of love across an age gap. With its intimate storytelling and nuanced performances, 'Athlete' draws viewers into a poignant journey of heartbreak, courage, and the search for authentic happiness.

I wasn't prepared for how much this film would move me. The cinematography is stark and beautiful, capturing loneliness in every corner of Kohei's life. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, and even though it's explicit, it never feels gratuitous. A hidden gem for those who appreciate slow, emotional character studies.

Honestly, the story is a bit thin. Kohei's transition from family man to gay lover feels rushed, and the plot relies heavily on sexual scenes to convey emotion. The performances are decent, but I needed more development of the central relationship to truly invest. It's okay for a one-time watch if you're into pink films, but not a must-see.

As a sucker for age-gap romances with deep emotional wounds, this hit every note for me. The way Yutaka gently coaxes Kohei out of his shell is heartbreakingly tender. Yes, it's explicit, but that rawness makes their connection feel so real. I cried during the final scene. Highly recommended for anyone who loves messy, human love stories.

I appreciate that the film tackles queerness in middle age and Japanese masculinity, but the power dynamics between the financially stable, older man and the seemingly adrift younger partner made me uncomfortable. Consent is shown but the emotional coercion is problematic. It feels more like an erotic fantasy than a balanced exploration. Not for the faint of heart.

The score is hauntingly beautiful—piano pieces that mirror Kohei's internal turmoil perfectly. I wish the sound mix was better in some intimate scenes, but the music alone elevated the emotional weight for me. Not a perfect film, but if you appreciate how sound can tell a story, this is worth a listen (and watch).
