In this poignant 18-minute Chinese short film, university athlete and guitarist Gu Jinxuan lives a life of denial, hiding his true sexuality from his conservative sister and the world. His carefully constructed facade begins to crack when he meets Huang Lin, a free-spirited music lover, at a local restaurant. A simple shared Coke sparks an undeniable connection, leading to stolen moments of guitar duets and tender glances. As their bond deepens, Jinxuan is torn between the warmth of real love and the suffocating fear of coming out. A third character—a persistent school junior named Ye Yuhan who has her own feelings for Jinxuan—adds painful layers to this love triangle. 'At First Glance to See It With' is a bittersweet exploration of internalized homophobia, the cages we build around ourselves, and the heartbreaking cost of choosing safety over authenticity. With evocative music and grounded performances, it delivers an emotional punch far beyond its short runtime.

I knew it would be sad going in, but Gu Jinxuan's struggle just broke my heart. The guy can act with just his eyes - you can see every suppressed feeling. The chemistry with Huang Lin felt so genuine, and that guitar scene? I'll never forget it. I wish they had a happy ending, but I appreciate the honesty.

For an 18-minute student film, it's decent - but the pacing feels rushed and the third character (the girl) is barely developed. The acting is okay, not great. The ending also felt too abrupt; I wanted more closure. Still, the core idea about closeted identity is handled with care, so I'll give it a pass.

The color grading and framing in this short film are surprisingly polished for a student project. The director uses space and distance between the two leads to show emotional separation - very clever. The lighting in the restaurant scene is soft and inviting, contrasting with the cold street shots at the end. A visual treat despite limited budget.

The music is the real star here. That English song they play together on the guitar is perfectly chosen - the lyrics mirror the entire story about hidden love. I've rewatched that scene countless times. The instrumental background score is so tender and melancholic. This film proves how much of an impact a great OST can have on a simple narrative.

What makes this film profound is its examination of the 'closet' not as a personal choice but as a social cage. Gu Jinxuan's decision to stay with a woman out of fear is painful to watch, but it's a realistic depiction of how heteronormative pressure forces people to betray themselves. The ending is a sharp critique of society, not a moral failing of the character. Important watch for anyone interested in queer identity struggles.
