Set against the quiet backdrop of a Chinese university campus, *Approach to Love* follows Wu Shuang and his best friend Zhutou, two gay young men navigating the delicate, often lonely search for romance in a society where open homosexuality remains a sensitive topic. Wu Shuang's heart races when he meets a captivating fellow student, but rather than confessing, he enlists Zhutou's help to court the object of his affection. What begins as a hopeful scheme soon strains their deep-rooted friendship, forcing both to confront jealousy, self-sacrifice, and the question of what truly matters. A tender, slow-burning coming-of-age story, the film captures the bittersweet ache of first love and the enduring power of platonic bonds. With a gentle pace and a focus on emotional realism, *Approach to Love* offers a rare, heartfelt window into LGBTQ+ youth in early-2010s China—a quiet gem for those who appreciate slice-of-life romance and nuanced character moments.

The story is simple but has some emotional depth about friendship and hidden feelings. The pacing is excruciatingly slow, which will test your patience, but the acting is decent and the ending is happy. Not something I'd rewatch, but worth a one-time watch for BL completists who want to see early Chinese indie BL.

I struggled to get through this. The lack of chemistry between the leads made it impossible for me to root for their romance. The slow pace didn't help either. As a huge BL fan, I appreciate the attempt, but this one just didn't captivate me at all. I'd only recommend it if you're doing research on every BL ever made.

This film offers a rare glimpse into gay life in China during a time when homosexuality was deeply taboo. The friendship between the two leads is touching, and the societal pressures are realistically portrayed. However, the pacing is sluggish and the technical aspects (cinematography, music) are lacking. Worth watching for the context, but not for entertainment.

The music was a huge disappointment. They lazily used a clip from Brokeback Mountain and otherwise the soundtrack is almost nonexistent or completely forgettable. The lack of background music made the already slow scenes drag even more. A better score could have really elevated the emotional moments.

Visually, this feels like a student project. The lighting is flat, the camera work is static, and there's no sense of cinematic composition. The dull color palette and cheap production value really hurt the viewing experience. I can see what they were going for, but the execution is just too amateurish.
