From the bustling offices of Taipei to the steamy confines of gyms and the addictive swipe of dating apps, *About Being Gay* is a Taiwanese short film that playfully dissects the colorful, chaotic, and surprisingly funny realities of gay life. Told through a series of vignettes—an ‘omnibus’ of everyday moments—it’s less a linear love story and more a cheeky, heartfelt documentary of shared experiences. We meet the office worker dodging gossip, the gym regular navigating awkward locker-room encounters, the best friend who’s everyone’s go-to advice guru, and the secret codes and signals that form a language all their own. With a light comedic touch, the film doesn’t shy away from the absurdities of modern dating, but it also finds warmth in the friendships, the heartbreaks, and the quiet understanding that comes with being part of a community. It’s a snapshot of a moment in time—2016 Taiwan—that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly universal. Perfect for anyone who’s ever laughed, cried, or rolled their eyes at the glorious messiness of finding connection.

I went in expecting nothing and came out smiling. Sure, it’s not a sweeping romance, but the snippets of gay life felt so real and funny. I loved the office scene with the secret code—it’s like a warm hug from a friend who just gets it. Low budget, huge heart.

The idea is cute, but the execution feels like a student film that never found its footing. The pacing is all over the place, the acting is amateurish, and the jokes land maybe half the time. It’s more of a curiosity than something I’d recommend—unless you’re desperate for any Taiwanese queer content from that era.

I can forgive a lot if the camera work has soul, but this one is flat and static. The lighting is harsh, the framing is basic, and the color grading looks like default video. A few creative cuts try to spice it up, but overall it’s visually underwhelming. That said, the chaos of the dating-app montage had a certain scrappy charm.

I appreciate the attempt to portray everyday gay life, but the film leans into stereotypes (the sassy best friend, the gym bunny) without any critique or nuance. Some jokes feel dated and borderline reductive. It’s not malicious, but it fails to say anything meaningful about identity or the pressures of queer existence. A missed opportunity for a more reflective piece.

The music is the highlight—a bouncy indie-pop score that really sells the comedic tone. There’s a scene where a guy gets a Grindr notification sound worked into the beat, which made me laugh out loud. The dialogue is messy, but the soundtrack holds it together. I wish the rest of the film had that same energy.
