When struggling stage actor Shirasaki Yuki lands his first major TV role in a gay romance drama, he’s thrilled—until he discovers his co-star is Hayama Asami, the effortlessly charming and wildly popular former clubmate from university who has no idea Shirasaki even remembers him. Desperate to bring authenticity to his character, the inexperienced Shirasaki agrees to Hayama’s surprising proposal: a fake relationship until filming wraps, to help him understand love. But as they start holding hands for the cameras and sharing private moments that feel all too real, the line between performance and reality blurs. What begins as a practical arrangement becomes a tender, slow-burn journey of self-discovery, buried feelings, and the terrifying risk of confessing what’s no longer pretend. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Tokyo’s Akasaka district and the chaotic intimacy of a BL set, this heartfelt series asks: can you truly act like you’re falling in love when you’re already falling for real?

I’m literally crying. The way Hayama looks at Shirasaki when he thinks no one is watching—pure yearning. That final intimate scene had me holding my breath; it felt so real and vulnerable. Yes, it’s slow, but that only made every smile and touch hit harder. A masterpiece of pining.

The premise is clever but the execution drags. Shirasaki’s refusal to communicate for eight episodes is exhausting, not endearing. I get the meta angle, but you can only watch two people sip coffee and stare into space so many times. The ending rush doesn’t excuse the middle’s stagnation.

Every frame is postcard-worthy. The use of warm neon lighting in Akasaka’s night scenes, the soft focus during the gnocchi-making sequence, and the intimate close-ups in the finale are a director’s dream. The visual storytelling compensates for the pacing issues—I could watch this on mute and still feel everything.

I appreciate that the show treats the fake-dating arrangement with ethical weight—Hayama never pressures Shirasaki, and the power imbalance is acknowledged. However, the miscommunication leans on stereotypes of gay men being unable to express feelings. Still, the finale’s breakthrough is a refreshing model of honest consent after uncertainty.

The opening theme is irresistible—upbeat yet wistful, perfectly capturing that ‘falling in love on set’ energy. The background piano motifs during key emotional beats are subtle but effective. I just wish the score had more variety in the slower middle episodes to keep the tension alive.
